Things to Think about Coming back from Sabbatical

I’m on sabbatical for the the 2023-2024 academic year. These are some notes about my research leave; and the projects that I undertook during that time.

We just finished invigilating the MAT B42 final exam; the last exam before my sabbatical starts. Suddenly, a huge amount of space has cleared ahead of me. It is up to me to decide what to do with all that time and space. This is all incredibly exciting.

My short term project is to convert the MAT B42 course materials in to a docstrip format. Fix the typos, polish up the course a bit, and make it a real continuation of MAT B41. For May and June, I’m going to focus on course development while Meg finishes her academic year.

Right on time, NCFDD put out a newsletter piece about sabbaticals They outline three stages and two foundational questions:

  1. What does success look like across each stage?
  2. What actions are needed to achieve success?

The three stages are:

  1. Pre-Sabbatical: Purpose & Planning (3 to 12 months prior)
    1. Identify two measurable outcomes for the sabbatical period.
    2. Make the first outcome a goal about well-being.
    3. Make the scholarly or creative goal something tangible.
    4. Reverse engineer from a goal to markers of success, including actions, resources.
  2. Mid-Sabbatical: Completing & Finding Balance
    1. Establish checkpoints for completing and finding balance during the sabbatical.
    2. Plan for unforeseen or unexpected opportunities.
    3. Connect with accountability partners to realize sabbatical goals
  3. Post-Sabbatical: Reflection and Re-Entry
    1. Initiate reflection to prepare for successful re-entry and maintenance of momentum
    2. Plan for how to carry forward progress on well-being goal
    3. Consult with mentors to review scholarly/creative outcomes and next goals
